20 years' experience as a landscape architect in private sector and local authority Recreation and Planning Departments.
KEY AREAS OF WORK IN THE PRACTICE
- For the past seven years Pam has provided specialist advice with Steve Wells Associates on 'landscape for sport' and 'active landscapes'. Pam has worked with the practice on a wide variety of projects including several local authority commissions, education sector projects, and a number of private developer and housing schemes.
- Pam played a key role in a major commission from the Coal Industries Social Welfare Organisation which sought to set up a grounds maintenance co-operative for Miners Welfares in the Barnsley area. The study and report that followed extensive consultation aimed to establish a system that protected and enhanced sporting and recreational provision on Welfare sites after the withdrawal of maintenance services previously provided by the local authority.
- Further extensive community consultation required Pam to work with residents in the development of a Horticultural Training Centre for the Preston Road New Deal for Communities in Hull. Funded by NDC and ERDF, this facility has now been completed and includes community meeting spaces and activity rooms, a classroom and IT suite, changing accommodation and offices. Externally, the project included training gardens, glasshouses, poly-tunnels and cold frames, plus car parking and storage yards.
EXPERIENCE
- Pam has had 14 years' previous experience in local government as a Landscape Architect designing and implementing a wide range of soft and hard landscape schemes in urban and rural settings, including housing, highways, urban parks and open spaces, country parks, industrial developments, education sites, land reclamation, general improvement areas, art in the landscape, conservation areas and SSIs, as well as children's play and outdoor sports facility provision. Pam worked for Wakefield MDC, Norwich City Council and Barnsley MBC.
- For a further seven years, Pam practiced as a Landscape Architect in the private sector and as a sole practitioner, specialising in industrial, commercial and residential developments, along with garden design and other private commissions. Pam has provided support as a Teaching Assistant for the Wakefield College Horticulture course.
- At a practical level, Pam has gained training and experience with the British Trust for Conservation Volunteers in conservation management: notably in hedge laying, dry-stone walling, woodland management, and task leadership.
OTHER INTERESTS
- Pam is a keen gardener, a follower of all sports; and an excellent soprano.
- A member of both Castleford Choral Society and Castleford Gilbert & Sullivan Society for which Pam has been respectively Secretary, Chair, and Publicity Secretary over the years.
