Case Study
OAKLANDS ROCKS
In September 2006, Oaklands School and Sports College was proud to open its new and refurbished facilities for sport. A special feature of this new development was the state of the art climbing facility pioneered by Andy Swan, the Director of PE and Sport, a keen mountaineer and rock climber.
New and remodelled facilities included ...
- a new entrance, community reception, foyer and social area with glazed views of the existing sports hall
- new ground floor changing accommodation and first floor dance studio converted from former squash courts
- a new fully equipped fitness suite
- a state of the art climbing tower and bouldering course
- a PE and sport theory and ICT classroom converted from a former bar area
- a refurbished fenced and floodlit synthetic pitch.
Steve Wells Associates worked with the school in preparing and submitting its successful Sports College bid in 2003.
Thereafter, York City Council commissioned SWA to prepare a report and recommendations for its synthetic pitch, resulting in a successful application for an award from Sport England.
With the advent of the New Opportunities Fund for PE and Sport in Schools (NOF3), York City Council further engaged Steve Wells Associates to work with the school to prepare the comprehensive sports development plans, along with detailed management and business plans to support its successful application to NOF.
In realising this £1.8m sports project, SWA also provided detailed advice and guidance on the design of the overall facility mix, ensuring it met the needs of the school's Sports College plans for the development of PE, sport and physical activity for students, staff, local sports clubs and the wider community.
We're proud of Oaklands, and we'd like to think that by working closely with our partners ... we made sport happen.
