Case Study
KINGSTONE OPENS
Kingstone School was selected as Barnsley MBC's number one priority in its New Opportunities Fund for PE and Sport in Schools (NOF3) portfolio.
Steve Wells Associates was initially commissioned directly by Kingstone School to prepare and submit the local authority's Stage Two NOF3 application for a new £2.4m sports hall development.
The proposals included ...
- a community reception, office, foyer and social area;
- a four-court sports hall with four cricket bays, trampoline spotting rig, equipment storage, etc.;
- separate student and community user changing accommodation complete with showers and toilets;
- additional changing, showers and toilets for staff, officials, and sessional coaches;
- independent accessible changing, showers and toilets;
- a fully equipped fitness suite;
- a dance studio with mirrors, ballet barres, a PA system and storage;
- a PE and sport theory and ICT classroom;
- a first aid room; and
- a PE staff room.
Working with the school, its community partners, local authority staff, and NOF's Sport England advisers, Steve Wells Associates completed and submitted the application in July 2003. Formal approval was granted in December 2003 with the scheme subsequently identified by NOF as a national case study.
In addition to preparing the successful NOF3 application, Steve Wells Associates drafted the brief to the Design Team to ensure facilities met both school and community users' needs.
SWA was further commissioned, this time by the local authority, to assist in delivering the project throughout design-development and through the implementation stages of the project. The commission was extended to include the provision of advice to the school on revenue funding and staffing for community engagement in sport.
In 2006, the ten-month construction programme commenced in January and was completed in October. Staff have now been appointed and, working with the school's community sports club partners, are now developing new programmes across a wide geographical area using a range of different venues with Kingstone as the hub site.
In helping Kingstone take a strategic role in the delivery of sports development locally, we have played our part in ... making sport happen.
